How does coaching work?
If you haven't used a coach before, you are probably wondering how coaching works and what is involved, yes? Here are some answers to frequently asked questions.
What Is life coaching?
It’s a series of powerful and purposeful conversations about you, your situation and your desired future state. Life coaching can help you to deal with the present and look to the future. My role is to listen to you without bias or prejudice, I then share my thoughts and my opinions with you. I give you feedback on what I see, hear and feel from you. I pay particular attention to what you are not saying and what you may not be able to see about yourself. This is powerfully useful to you and will help you make decisions and plan for your desired future state. I am your guide and will not leave you until you achieve.
Often I will challenge you. If you need a reality check, I will help you back to earth. If you need to free your mind and see opportunities, I can help you open up your horizons. I can, if requested, make suggestions – but I will always try to get you to find your own ideas and solutions as that’s when they are the most powerful. I will hold you accountable for them in all cases. Together, we work towards decisions, change and/or acceptance.
The sessions give you time and space, support and structure as you think, feel, reflect and prepare to act. Exercises and tasks in between the sessions keep the momentum and motivation going.
How do we work together?
Coaching mostly takes place on Skype or Zoom video calling (don’t worry if you haven’t used this before as we have a little test session) or phone in 45-60 minute sessions. You book an allotted time to call and we take it from there. This makes it convenient for the time poor and is a very powerful way of getting straight to the issue. Face to face coaching can also be arranged.
How many sessions will I need?
That depends on what you wish to achieve. I ask that clients commit to two months coaching in order to see real sustainable change. There are a range of coaching learning journeys that I offer and we will discuss what is the best one for you.
How often should I have a session?
I work with the client’s needs. I encourage clients to have at least session a week. It could be more if you are finding it difficult to gain momentum, feel particularly stuck or are excited about reaching your desired outcomes. We work together to get the right balance for you.
Is it like therapy?
No, I’m not a therapist. Coaching is definitely not therapy and shouldn’t be. Coaching is about setting yourself real objectives to achieve, establishing what is real now and what may be holding you back, planning strategies to move forward and being held to account for your outcomes. I may look to your past to see what might be holding you back but coaching is dynamic as it works in the here and now and gives you a practical route to where you want to be.
What does the coach do?
